9/18/2003 - Ashland Chemical Drumfiller Solution
BEFORE
AFTER

Ashland Chemical recently faced a problem with their production and turned to Birmingham-Toledo for the solution. The Birmingham distribution center for Ashland Chemical receives bulk deliveries of chemicals via truck and rail car. They then batch these products, usually in 55 gallon drums, for distribution to local manufacturers including Mercedes Benz and Honda.
The problem involved an antiquated drumfiller weighing system whose manufacturer had gone out of business. Replacement parts were non-existent or very costly. Spillage due to the old system cost the company lost product, lost production time, and morale problems with employees who were forced to deal with the spills.
Birmingham-Toledo provided a new semi-automatic system to solve the problem. The model 9127 filler with JagXTREME weighing controller proved to be the perfect answer. As new orders were received and new batches formulated, Ashland employees fell in love with the system. "Programming is easy, and the guys love it," stated Ashland plant manager Bill Ramirez.
After some initial problems with configuration, which were handled professionally and with ease by Birmingham-Toledo technician Jerry Whitmire, the production area is running like never before. Ashland plant employees are productive and working in a clean, fast, spill-free, safe environment.
"This was not an easy project," said Birmingham-Toledo account representative Robert Proctor. With both parent companies, Ashland Chemical and Mettler-Toledo, based in Columbus, Ohio, this type of project is usually handled corporately. "Our relationship with our local Ashland partners made it work," Proctor added.
